Diego Maradona Short Biography


Diego Maradona was born on 30th October 1960 in Lanús, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was born in a Roman Catholic family his parents were Diego Maradona Senior and Dalma Salvadora Franco.

He married Fiancée Claudia Villafañe on 7 November 1984 and had two daughters Dalma Nerea and Gianinna Dinorah. Dalma was born on 2 April 1987 and Gianinna was born on 16 May 1989. Due to some reasons Maradona and Villafañe had to divorce in 2004. According to Wikipedia, He was addicted to cocaine in the mid-1980s.

In 1991 he faced a lot of drug crises, due to his drug addiction he faced weight gain and he has to undergo gastric bypass surgery in a clinic in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on 6 March 2005. His surgeon said that Maradona would follow a liquid diet for three months to return his normal weight.


He made his comeback with a thinner figure. In 2009 he faced hepatitis due to the side effects of alcohol and was readmitted to a hospital in Buenos Aires. On 8 May 2007, he was finally discharged and he declared that he has quit drinking and not used drugs in two and half years.

Playing for Argentino Juniors, Diego Maradona made his professional debut on 20th October 1976 in a match against Talleres de Córdoba. He entered the match wearing a 16 number jersey, he was the youngest player in the history of Argentine Primera División.

Few minutes after debuting, Maradona kicked the ball through Juan Domingo Cabrera’s legs, making a nutmeg that would become legendary. Diego Maradona spends five years playing for Argentinos Juniors i.e from 1976 to 1981 and scored 115 goals in 167 appearances.

Maradona started receiving offers from other clubs including River Plate who offered to make him the club’s best-paid player, but Maradona chooses Boca-Juniors as it was his dream club. On 20 February 1981, he signed a contract with Boca-Juniors. On 10 April, Diego Maradona played his first Superclásico against River Plates and defeated them with 3-0 with Maradona dribble.

At the age of 18, Maradona played the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship in Japan and emerged as the star of the tournament. On 2 June 1979, he scored his first senior international goal against Scotland. Maradona played his first FIFA World Cup in 1982.

In 1986 Maradona captained the Argentine national team to victory in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, winning the final in Mexico City against West Germany. In 1990 he was a captain again but his ankle injury affected his overall performance but still made his way to the finals. In the 1994 FIFA World Cup, he played only 2 games scoring one goal against Greece.

On 2 November 2020, Diego Maradona was admitted to a hospital in La Plata due to some psychological reasons, and a day later he went through brain surgery and released on 12 November 2020.


On 25 November 2020, at the age of 60, Maradona died of a heart attack at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to Wikipedia, In a statement on social media, the Argentine Football Association expressed “its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend”, adding: “You will always be in our hearts.”President Alberto Fernández announced three days of national mourning.
